Dear learner Sergio Illuminato,
Congratulations on completing What Is Contemporary Art?
Course offered by The Museum of Modern Art of New York, USA
The Museum of Modern Art is a place that fuels creativity, ignites minds, and provides inspiration. With extraordinary exhibitions and the world’s finest collection of modern and contemporary art, MoMA is dedicated to the conversation between the past and the present, the established and the experimental. Our mission is helping you understand, enjoy, and use the art of our time.
What Is Contemporary Art? In this course, you have considered this question through more than 70 works of art created between 1980 and the present, with particular attention to the art of the past ten years. You heard directly from artists, architects and designers from all over the world their creative processes, materials and inspiration. Five themes served as a guide: media from Internet television, territories and transportation, materials and activities, agency and power. You have watched 3D printed glass and fiber sculptures, shows in a factory and museum, painted portraits, as well as those made with artificial intelligence, and interventions on television and video games. And much more, all taken from the collection of the Museum of modern art. You have been invited to the studios of the artists and their neighborhoods to experiment with the materials they use. Not only have you developed a deeper understanding of how artists work today, but you have also explored some of their many approaches to the pressing issues and questions of our time. By taking this course, you have gained confidence in looking at contemporary art wherever you meet it and making connections with your life or creative practice.
